Teleseminar: Planned Giving for Shy People

Description:

Shy people bring special gifts to development work, especially where planned giving is concerned. The key is to approach the work in a way that lets your personality shine. Whether you are detail or big picture oriented, technical or non-technical, outgoing or not-as-outgoing, you can add planned giving to your development work and start attracting long-term gifts that seed the future. This teleclass is for anyone who is shy about planned giving.

Planned giving gives donors options.  It also enhances the annual fund by deepening the relationships of your loyal givers. The key to doing planned giving well is to break it down into small steps and develop your own style of communicating the message and cultivating donors. It may look different at another organization, and considering the variety of personalities of executives and development professionals, that’s understandable.  Offering donors more options is important and working from your strengths is how to do it naturally and sustainably. Yes, you may have to stretch out of your comfort zone a bit - that’s growth.

Waiting until you know all about planned gifts before beginning will probably mean more delays before you begin. That’s why this teleseminar focuses only on the basics of bequests and retirement plans as charitable gifts. Did you know that 85% of planned gifts are will provisions (bequests) and retirement plans? These two types of planned gifts are popular and easy for both donors and nonprofit organizations. Focusing on these two planned gift types can increase revenue streams for your organization. Beginning is the hardest part.

Examples of common fears that prevent development professionals from doing planned giving are:

  • I don’t know enough.
  • What if I make a mistake?
  • I might offend someone.
  • I don’t have time to learn all the details and stay updated!
  • I don’t know how to start the conversation.
  • What do I say?

What if the topic of planned giving were broken down into practical, manageable steps, providing enough information for you to gain confidence and not so much that you felt overwhelmed?

What if there were no confusing legal or financial terminology used in the class so that you could talk to donors using your natural vocabulary?

What if you gained enough confidence about planned giving so that you could initiate at least one conversation about it a week after class?

This teleseminar may be for you. We will cover:

  • How retirement plans and bequests work as charitable gifts
  • Why donors like these deferred gifts
  • How to work with the board
  • Cultivating top prospects
  • Effective marketing ideas
