ABOUT JEAN CRAIG LONG
Who is Jean Craig Long?

Our Vision
Our vision is to help creative and growth-oriented nonprofits become strong and function collaboratively as networks that share systems and resources to achieve their goals. How can you help make this happen?

Our Values
Integrity – we do what we say we will do. We show you how to work from your strengths with authenticity to build a framework for success.

Learning – knowledge is the best way to add value to our lives and cultivate new perspectives. It includes experimenting and trying new things, which may involve risk-taking. It allows the re-defining of failure (Post It notes appeared because a new glue failed to adhere properly).

Collaborative partnerships are emerging in the new economy as a means to long-term health and growth. Survival, as individuals and as organizations depends on the extent of interconnectedness.

Fun and laughter inspire some of our most creative ideas. Most of our brightest ideas come when we’re not expecting them!

Service – one way of contributing to the greater good is by helping nonprofit systems function more effectively. The role we play in communities was described by one client as that of a bridge that connects nonprofit needs to resources. We are committed to a very high level of service to our clients.

Following the advice of two up-and-comers at The Duke Endowment, I took a leap of faith to pursue a career in nonprofit development.

When I tell people about my 30 year career in nonprofit development they are amazed that my passion to build strong nonprofit networks remains so high. I explain that the potential is limitless when people come together to focus on a shared vision. The most exciting thing to me is when I see the lights in the eyes of visionary leaders and donors when they make a connection.

As an executive coach and consultant, Jean helps build solid business, administrative, and funding infrastructures for long-term adaptability and sustainability. She uses emerging insights on the power of collaborative learning to build strong, mutually supportive, learning partnerships among leadership, staff and volunteers

No substitute for experience
To her clients, Jean brings over 25 years of capital, comprehensive, and endowment campaigns and planned giving experiences at institutions including Davidson College, Roanoke College, Mint Museum of Art, and UNC Charlotte. Donor cultivation and solicitation, gift planning, volunteer leadership management, staff training and board education were key areas of responsibilities that are now specialties.

She is a past president of the North Carolina Planned Giving Council, a graduate of The College of William & Mary National Planned Giving Institute and the R&R Newkirk Comprehensive Planned Giving Seminar.

What happens in my free time?
I love to cut my paddle through the glassy surface of a quiet lake, balanced on my kayak and leaving ripples of a wake behind. Early in the morning, it’s the most peaceful place on earth with just the birds, squirrels, and occasional deer feeding at the water’s edge. Sometimes snakes. No words, no radios or phones….in the middle somewhere, being carried by the current - that’s my definition of serenity.

“Connecting with the donor’s heart is the essence of effective development. Learning why someone chooses to support your cause is the single most important piece of information to learn about a donor.”

--Jean Craig Long at a 2006 training conference
